So is this quote simply saying we went from idolizing material things to being a country of perverts?

We have moved from a "manufacturing" economy to an "idea" economy. There are many places in the world that can make our stuff for us. Is it important that we make some stuff? Yes. It is important that we grow some food, but that didn't stop folks from moving from the farm in the 20s, 30s and 40s.
